BrickOdex's Story

My LEGO Journey and the Birth of BrickOdex

My love for LEGO began way back in the early 80s. I vividly remember the excitement of building my first collections. Set number 6080, the majestic King's Castle, and the iconic 6274 Caribbean Clipper were among my earliest treasures. Along with a few small space sets and countless loose bricks, I built a collection I was incredibly proud of. The Caribbean Clipper, with its classic blue and white sails, held a special place in my heart – it was my pride and joy.

LEGO has always been a part of my life in some way, a constant creative outlet. However, I truly rediscovered my passion for building in 2019. My eldest child had just turned four, and I had recently finished my cancer treatments. It felt like the perfect excuse to celebrate and dive back into the world of bricks by buying a few new sets.

Since then, a few years have passed, and my collection has grown into something I cherish. It's a mix of sets perfect for imaginative play and others proudly displayed. As the collection expanded, keeping track of everything started to become a real challenge. What sets were built and on display? Which ones were carefully packed away in storage, waiting for the space and time for a future build? What was the condition of each set?

Like many collectors, I initially turned to spreadsheets to manage everything. But as a "data guy," I knew there had to be a better way. Spreadsheets felt clunky and weren't truly built for the dynamic nature of a growing LEGO collection.

So, I did what any passionate person with a problem and a bit of technical inclination would do – I decided to build my own solution. And that's how BrickOdex was born.

Why BrickOdex?

The name BrickOdex is a nod to the idea of having a comprehensive index of your LEGO sets. Think of it as your brickset Rolodex or your personal LEGO Pokédex – a complete index of your precious collection, easily searchable and always at your fingertips.

With BrickOdex, I wanted to create a tool that was just right – offering the features needed to effectively manage a collection without being overly complicated. It's designed to help you keep track of what you have, what you want, and what you love.
